Lakewood’s Hockey Rangers split their weekend conference games dropping a 4-2 decision to the Chagrin Falls Tigers on Friday night before rebounding for a 10-0 2 period victory over the Twinsburg Tigers. Traveling to the Pond on Friday night, the Rangers sprinted out to a 2-1 first period lead on goals by Will Holden and Gavin Fielder, but the Tigers tied the game in the second and put the game away with two third period goals. The loss dropped the team’s conference record to 1-1 and overall record to 4-1. On Saturday night, the team returned to the friendly confines of Winterhurst Arena where they exploded for a 10-0 victory over another set of Tigers – Twinsburg. Senior forward Will Holden led the way with 6 goals while Gavin Fielder, Jude Johnson, Eli Ladue and Dyllon Yatson also lit the lamp for Lakewood.

Senior net minder Rob Holden started the game for Lakewood, but freshman goalie Mike Grucella got his first taste of varsity action as he minded the nets in the second frame. The two combined for the first shutout of the year for Lakewood.

The Rangers will be on the road for 2 conference games this weekend. On Saturday afternoon, they will face the Westlake Demons in a 3:15 pm contest at North Olmsted recreation center. The two teams last met last November with the Rangers skating away with a 1-0 independent game win. This season, the Demons have dropped into the Blue North division of the Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League. On Sunday, Lakewood continues its weekend road trip with a conference game vs Normandy. The puck will drop at 6:45 pm at the Brooklyn Recreation center. Normandy was a last minute addition to the Blue North and to ease confusion on the schedule, assumed all of the home dates which Brecksville, who was previously a member of the conference, had scheduled. The two teams have met once earlier this season in the first league game of the year, when the Rangers scored an overtime power play goal to walk away with an 8-7 victory. Lakewood currently sports a 5-1 overall record with a 2-1 mark in the conference.
