Rangers gobble up victories over Thanksgiving weekend

Posted by Lakewood Rangers Varsity Ice Hockey on Dec 03 2019 at 01:04PM PST in 2019-2020
The Lakewood Rangers swept through a three game Anderson Memorial hockey tournament at Ries Ice Rink in Parma. On Friday, the icers opened up the weekend with a 4-1 win over Toledo Whitmer, followed by a 6-3 win over divisional rival Chagrin Falls and an 8-1 win over White division opponent CVCA. Going into the weekend, the Rangers faced a tough challenge as three members of the squad entered the tournament on the injured list. Sophomore defenseman Austin Scherer and Freshmen Gavin Fullmer and Jay Schmoldt sustained injuries the previous weekend and were unavailable for the contests. But, Lakewood used all of the remaining players while finishing round robin play with a 3-0 record. Unfortunately, they ended the round robin tied with Normandy, who was also 3-0 and since the two teams hadnt faced each other in round robin play, the spot in the championship game then moved to the tie breakers. The first tie breaker was least penalty minutes – and again both teams completed their three games with only 8 minutes in penalties so the tie breaker moved to the next level – which was a coin toss.

Unfortunately, the Rangers lost the coin toss and Normandy advanced to the championship game where they were defeated by North Olmsted 9-2.

With the weekend performances, Lakewood’s season record now stands at 4-0 with a 1-0 conference mark.

This weekend, the Rangers get right back into GCHSHL divisional play with a pair of conference games. On Friday night, Lakewood will travel to the Pond for an 8:40 tilt against Chagrin Falls. Then, on Saturday night, Lakewood returns home for a 7pm faceoff hosting the Twinsburg Tigers.
